Getting around

South African transportation services are efficient and reliable. Transport options in South Africa include car hire, bus, rail and taxi services.

Taxi Travel
In South Africa you will not find taxis waiting on the road to be hailed, rather they must be specifically telephoned for service.
Taxi travel can be split into two categories: metered taxis and minibus taxis. Metered taxis are best for international visitors and can be ordered from your hotel.
Minibus taxis are more for the general public, serving areas not covered by the country's bus and rail networks. This services must be used with caution as the minibuese tend to be old and in poor condition and the drivers have a tendency to drive recklessly.

Bus Travel
South African bus travel provides a great way to see the country and the buses are comfortable. Tourism buses are generally operated by Greyhound, Autopax and Intercape. South African bus travel can also include trips to neighbouring African countries. There are also many buses that operate inter-city routes such as Translux and City-to-City.

Rail Travel
South African transportation services include numerous rail operates, including Shosholoza Meyl, Premier Classe and the ultra-luxurious Blue train. The metro train is the cheapest from of transport, connecting central Johannesburg to Soweto, Pretoria and most of the satellite towns along the Witwatersrand. However, the railway infrastructure was built in Johannesburg's infancy and covers only the older areas in the city's south.
