Getting around
|
South African transportation services are efficient and reliable. Transport options in South Africa include car hire; bus, rail and taxi services.

Taxi Travel In South Africa you will not find taxis waiting on the road to be hailed, rather they must be specifically telephoned for service.
Taxi travel can be split into two categories: metered taxis and minibus taxis. Metered taxis are best for international visitors and can be ordered from your hotel.
Minibus taxis are more for the general public serving areas not covered by the country’s bus and rail networks. This service must be used with caution as the minibuses tend to be old and in poor condition and the drivers have a tendency to drive recklessly.
Bus Travel South African bus travel provides a great way to see the country and the buses are comfortable. Tourism buses are generally operated by Greyhound, Autopax and Intercape. South African bus travel can also include trips to neighbouring African countries. There are also many buses that operate inter-city routes such as Translux and City-to-City.
Rail Travel South African transportation services include numerous rail operators, including the Shosholoza Meyl, Premier Classe and the ultra-luxurious Blue Train. The metro train is the cheapest form of transport, connecting central Johannesburg to Soweto, Pretoria and most of the satellite towns along the Witwatersrand. However, The railway infrastructure was built in Johannesburg's infancy and covers only the older areas in the city's south. |
Things you should know
Drinking Water
Drinking water in South Africa is safe to drink and cook with when taken from taps in urban areas. Not all tap water in rural areas is safe for consumption, so take precautions if necessary.

Smoking
South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places, such as restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices.
The South African smoking laws were tightened even further in 2009 when the government banned smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas, as well as smoking in cars where there are children under the age of 12 present.
Tipping
Tipping in South Africa is widely practised. In restaurants and bars, 10-15% is the accepted tipping standard. Parking attendants and security guards are common in parking areas and generally ask if they can watch your car - if you agree, a tip of R2 (1AED) and more should be offered. Hotel porters usually expect a tip of R10 (5AED) to R20 (10AED) per porter service.
Shopping
Shopping in South Africa is a very popular pastime for South Africans. International visitors are often attracted to goods that are proudly South African. With gold and diamonds being amongst the most famed resources, buying jewellery and gemstones are oftern high on the international visitor's shopping list.
