Dr. Christopher Haw is the chairperson and founding member of the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), as well as the director and co-founder of Aurora Power Solutions (APS), a photovoltaic (PV) project development and consulting company established in South Africa in 2008.
Since PV was omitted from the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) draft of October 2010, Chris has been focused on driving the foundation of SAPVIA to meet its objectives and, in conjunction with his colleagues on the management board, he successfully contributed to the lobby for the inclusion of PV in the IRP, now to the level of 1450MW up to 2030. This lobby included setting up and attending government meetings with key stakeholders at the Treasury, DoE, DTI, Eskom, SARI and DPE, amongst others.
Chris has co-authored a paper on the suitability of PV for the South African REFIT which was subsequently submitted to the Journal of Energy in Southern Africa, as well as to government as part of NERSA's public consultation for the IRP. In addition to this he collated feedback and co-presented at the REFIT public hearing in November 2010 to Nersa and the DoE, as well as at the REFIT public hearings in May this year. Through these activities Chris has developed a keen understanding of the issues surrounding the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, as well as the political issues and bottlenecks facing other areas of the industry at the moment such as the unlocking of the rooftop PV market in South Africa.
